In Memory of
Captain Richard Holloway
Captain Richard Holloway of the Royal Engineers was killed in action on 23 December 2013. Captain
Holloway died after being engaged by enemy fire whilst on operations east of Kabul. Richard was an
exceptional young man, a perfectionist in everything he did and a loyal brother and friend who
embraced life to the full. He was a dedicated and totally committed member of the Armed Forces,
relishing the excitement and challenge but always serious and reflective about his duties and
responsibilities to those with whom he served. Richard was highly respected for his outstanding ability,
humility, sense of humour and passion for life, particularly outdoor pursuits such as mountain biking,
kayaking, surfing and climbing. Each year we participate in an event to celebrate Rich's love of life and
outdoor activity.
2018 Event - Conquer Mont Ventoux
Mont Ventoux stands 1,912m above sea level and is called the Beast of Provence. We aim to summit the mountain multiple times in 24 hours.
Some will hike up, some will bike up, others will attempt multiple ascents. But everyone will push themselves well past their comfort zone!
We are supporting The Outward Bound Trust which is an educational charity dedicated to unlocking the potential in young people between
the ages of nine and 25 through discovery and adventure in the wild. They are given access to adventurous experiences through which they
can learn to achieve more than they ever thought possible.
Past Events
2015 Event - Edinburgh Marathon and Coast to Coast by Bike
A small group of participants completed the Edinburgh marathon at the
end of May which started in the City Centre and finished at Musselburgh.
Conditions were extremely windy!
A second event was held in June where a larger group cycled from coast
to coast across the North Pennines, finishing at the Marina at Roker, just
in time for last fish and chips orders.
2014 Event - Three Peaks Challenge (in 24 Hours!)
Over 30 of Rich’s local, university and military friends completed the
National Three Peaks Challenge in a gruelling 24 hour race against the
clock, conquering Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon.
£13,834 was raised for Battle Back (through Help for Heroes) which helps
rehabilitate injured servicemen and women through sporting and
adventurous activities.
2017 Event - Great Glen Canoe Challenge
Starting in Fort William, the Great Glen Canoe Trail follows 60 miles of the
Caledonian Canal, finishing in Inverness. Armed with canoes, paddles and
plenty of supplies, a group set off to complete the distance across three
days and two nights.
The weather remained favourable and a small additional group cycled
part of the route.
2016 Event - Tough Mudder London West
As the name suggests this was extremely tough and extremely muddy! To
add to the “excitement” on the course, the final challenge was to run
through an electric shock loaded mud bath.
£3,492 was raised for RNLI - Royal National Lifeboat Institution - a charity
which Rich supported from an early age and the work of which he was
fascinated with having seen the lifeboat launch at Walton Pier.
